Sign posters and upcoming premiere

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 05:07 AM PST

Here are the official posters for forensic-investigation series Sign, which stars Park Shin-yang and Kim Ah-joong as forensic doctors and crime scene investigators (although truth be told, I’m more into second leads Eom Ji-won, playing a DA, and Jung Kyeo-woon as a cop). The leads will hunt for the titular signs (aka evidence/clues) on the bodies of the victims they are called to inspect.

It’s no stretch to call this a Korean C.S.I since it seems the production is making the comparison fairly deliberately, and the U.S. series has done quite well in Korea. (Other popular imports: Prison Break, Lost.) But since this is a kdrama, I presume Sign will depart from the established C.S.I structure and include more character development, rather than focusing each episode on one specific case. Plus, it’ll look at the murders from multiple angles: crime scene, laboratory, prosecutor’s office, police station. Still, I’ll be curious to see if Sign can meld the Korean drama style of storytelling with the episodic nature of U.S. procedurals; it seems every year or two there’s talk of a new hybrid kdrama style tackling the Western format, but ultimately fizzling.

2010 KBS Drama Awards

Posted: 31 Dec 2010 07:30 PM PST

KBS just may have the longest winners list at the end-of-the-year award ceremony, but they do have the most programming. Not surprisingly, some of the big winners were expected names, like Baker King Kim Tak-gu, Cinderella’s Sister, and Chuno.

The Grand Prize of the night went to Jang Hyuk, who beat out Choi Su-jong’s president (of the nation), Jeon Gwang-ryul’s president (of a baking company), Kim Gab-soo’s president (of a makgulli factory), Lee Mi-sook’s scheming wife, and Moon Geun-young’s damaged daughter characters.

Red-carpet-wise, KBS’s event was much more interesting than MBC’s lackluster event the night before, and perhaps a step up from the slightly better SBS awards, although there was a curious abundance of white. Everyone wearing it looked great, but I had to wonder whether, if you put ‘em all together, they’d look like models at a bridal convention.

2010 SBS Drama Awards

Posted: 31 Dec 2010 03:47 PM PST

There are lots of awards handed out, for sure, but at least SBS has some strong shows this year, with great performances all around in the competition. Go Hyun-jung stacks up another Daesang for her turn as the first Korean female president in Daemul, which if I’m to go based on all the parodies, involved lots of shouting in the rain. There’s a performance by Noh Min-woo, a THREE-way tie for Best Couple, and of course, some red carpet hits and misses.

See the stars before they were stars

Posted: 31 Dec 2010 10:01 AM PST

I love these types of shows: KBS has put together a special program, Top Star X-File, which digs up old photos and footage of current stars. Among those featured in the episode: Hyun Bin of the currently airing Secret Garden, Go Hyun-jung of the currently airing Daemul, Yoon Shi-yoon of this year’s hit Baker King Kim Tak-gu, and So Ji-sub of this summer’s Road No. 1.

Hyun Bin’s photos come from a segment of the KBS variety program Sunday 101%, back in 2004, which makes this pre-Samsoon but post-Nonstop 3. Not that you will have forgotten what he looks like now, but here’s a comparison photo from Secret Garden — looks like more than just six years have passed, doesn’t it?
