New Gisaeng Story premieres, Flames hits a high

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 05:09 AM PST

New Gisaeng Story is the new kid on the weekend block, taking up the SBS broadcast slot recently vacated by the much-watched Secret Garden. The drama premiered yesterday with its first two episodes, and pulled in a pretty respectable 10.4% and 12.2%.

At least, those are what I’d consider respectable numbers; the media’s already jumping to call it a marked failure to carry over Secret Garden‘s 30%+ ratings, which seems like a silly thing to claim since even the popular dramas tend to build ratings over their runs. Secret Garden‘s 17.2% premiere was strong, but a long ways off from its 35.2% finale. A double-digit premiere in this day and age? Safe, I’d say.

New Gisaeng Story is set in the present day and centers around a traditional gisaeng house (the only one of its kind, which caters to an upper-crust clientele) and the women who work there. An interesting concept, given the mix of old-fashioned and new, high-class and low, classy and tawdry. I haven’t seen it yet so I don’t know if its execution lived up to its potential, but based on the premise alone, I’m interested in seeing where it goes.

Meanwhile, MBC’s makjang extravaganza Flames of Desire benefited from the removal of its main competitor and hit its series high with a 20.5%, up from its previous high of 17.7%. It’s been performing solidly all along, but I suspect it could have been much higher without Secret Garden dominating the weekends. With nearly two months left to go in its 50-episode run, I anticipate that Flames will be performing a lot more strongly now.

Kim Jae-won completes his military service

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 09:06 PM PST

Always nice to see a celeb coming back from army duty, especially when so many are leaving to begin their service. Kim Jae-won, who turns 30 next month, was discharged on January 24 and greeted by a crowd of approximately 200 fans in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Wow, has it been two years already?

I’m a bit annoyed that his moment was overshadowed with questions of Hyun Bin’‘s impending service (really, media? You have to make this about Hyun Bin? I know he’s hot right now, but let’s have some grace, here…), but Kim answered by saying, “At first, the thought of spending two years in the army seems daunting. But looking back, I think it was a fulfilling experience. Hyun Bin will be enlisting in cold weather, so I hope he’ll stay healthy. I’ll look forward to seeing him come back even stronger after his discharge.”

Athena accident puts broadcast at risk

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 04:32 PM PST

An on-set accident for Athena: Goddess of War has sent its lead star, Jung Woo-sung, to the hospital and has producers worried that this week’s episode might not make it out on time.

The accident has been described as a “serious car wreck” that occurred on January 23 during an action shoot. The scene involved actor Jung Chan-woo (playing Athena agent Chul-kyu) being hit by a car while trying to shoot Jung-woo (Jung Woo-sung) in an underground parking lot.

However, the car slipped during the shoot, and both actors were injured while hustling to avoid being hit — Jung Chan-woo injured his head, and Jung Woo-sung his right knee. They were taken to the emergency room for treatment.

Although the situation is still being monitored, it’s being reported that it’s likely Jung Woo-sung will not be able to return to filming right away — or possibly at all — which puts the entire production into emergency mode. The drama was unable to complete its filming for this week’s broadcast of Episode 14, which means that Tuesday’s episode may be postponed while the actors heal. Beyond that is a question mark.

Missing a broadcast due to an accident isn’t exactly common, but it’s been known to happen in extreme circumstances. In 2008, Painter of the Wind delayed a broadcast when Moon Geun-young broke her nose while filming, and in 2009, Gu Hye-sun’s car accident delayed an episode of Boys Before Flowers. In both instances, the dramas whipped up a hasty “special” to broadcast instead.

Nine Korean films at Berlin film festival

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 01:23 PM PST

Korea’s making a big showing at the Berlin Film Festival, with nine films headed abroad, in competition for jury prizes. A few are films we’ve talked about for a while, like Late Autumn, while a good number of them are experimental films or shorts that are more artistically adventurous. Can’t wait to get my hands on some of these. Also, Binnie’s having some year, isn’t he?

Here’s a list of the films in competition at Berlinale:

Love Me, Love Me Not, by director Lee Yoon-ki, starring Hyun Bin and Im Soo-jung in a melodrama about a married couple on the brink of divorce. (Poster above.) This is THE HAIR that made me go crazy. Is it wrong to watch a movie for a hairdo? Well I don’t care ’cause I’m gonna do it anyway.
