Flirting with the afterlife in 49 Days Posted: 05 Jan 2011 05:13 AM PST Here’s some casting news that makes me happy: Jung Il-woo (Return of Iljimae), pictured above, and Jo Hyun-jae (Three Dads, One Mom) have been chosen for an upcoming SBS drama, 49 Days. (Okay, and also former Seeya singer Nam Gyuri, recently of weekend show Life Is Beautiful. Meh.) This’ll be bound to make Jo Hyun-jae fans happy, as he has been out of the spotlight for quite some time now; he has been in military service for two years and was discharged this summer, but his father’s passing has kept him from a comeback till now. Posted: 04 Jan 2011 08:33 PM PST So far, I like. It’s not So You Think You Can Dance, the drama version, (and someone please get on that, stat) but it shows promise to become something like it, so I like what I’ve seen thus far. It’s actually got a healthy dose of drama-comedy-song-and-dance, though I’d like a little more of the song and dance, and well, I could stand for more comedy in everything. I think the drama is still finding its footing, and the performances are uneven (with some of the worst by veterans, whereas the newbies are holding up okay in contrast), but there’s two crucial things I like about it at the outset: the premise, and the tone. I do trust that this drama will do one thing, and one thing well—deliver on its setup of dreamers-to-stars in a satisfying way. Whether or not the performances will hold up is another story, but what the hell, let’s dream high, shall we? (...) © girlfriday for Dramabeans, 2011. | Permalink | 70 comments | Add to del.icio.us |
Two more reasons to watch My Princess Posted: 04 Jan 2011 05:01 PM PST …or should we count that as twelve more reasons? Well, you can’t cast Song Seung-heon and NOT expect a shower scene, yeah? (Although, who showers in a speedo? I consider that speedo an affront to realism!) One more day till the premiere…

Secret Garden concert doubles as finale shoot Posted: 04 Jan 2011 02:07 PM PST With its popularity soaring, weekend drama Secret Garden is planning an OST concert to be held next weekend, just in time for the drama’s finale. It will be held at the Children’s Park Dome Art Hall on January 15, and will feature performances by artists Baek Ji-young and 4Men, who are both on the soundtrack, as well as actors Yoon Sang-hyun and even Hyun Bin. The drama’s soundtrack has been selling briskly online as well as offline; the first CD (OST parts 1 and 2) has sold out of its 30,000 copies. The second CD (parts 3 and 4) recorded nearly 30,000 pre-orders as soon as its release date, January 3, was announced. A part 5 is planned, which will feature Hyun Bin’s version of the song “That Man,” which already has two versions in circulation (one being “That Woman”). My first thought was that it was odd timing to schedule the concert for broadcast night — great way to keep fans from watching, right? — but it appears they’ve got that covered. The concert runs from 8 to 10 pm, after which the roughly 2,000 attendees will be able to watch the 10 pm broadcast live. The concert will be pulling double-duty, because footage from the Saturday night show will then be used in Sunday night’s finale broadcast. Talk about cutting it close with the live-shoot. (I know it’s common for a drama’s final episode to be shot a day or two before it airs, but I’ll never get over thinking that isn’t CRAZY.) The pricing has drawn some disgruntled complaints, however, as many feel the 99,000 won price tag is too steep (close to $90 USD). Concert organizers countered by saying the quality of the show will be greater than ordinary pop concerts. (O rly?) But in the end, I suspect enough fans will be happy to pay up to get to see Yoon Sang-hyun and Hyun Bin in person. RELATED POSTS

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:30 AM PST I think this drama is finally finding its groove. The first few episodes felt like the writers were just trying to establish all the relationships and reconnect everyone so that they can all end up in one place. This episode finishes that up, so the story can really come into full force with all the double crossings and spy work. One gripe: Sean Richard’s character needs a friggin’ name!
