Cha Seung-won in recovery following surgery Posted: 30 Sep 2010 05:55 AM PDT A few conflicting reports are making the rounds today, so here are the nuts and bolts and you can make of them what you will: In mid-September, Cha Seung-won left the Japan shoots for his upcoming drama Athena when he contracted an acute bacterial virus infection, and now reports state that his condition had grown more serious, requiring surgery. Currently, Cha is in recovery following the surgery at a Kangnam hospital in Seoul. Shortly after the latest wave of news articles broke, his management came out to refute claims that his health was in a worsened state, saying on September 30 that Cha has improved, and that “He has continued his hospitalization at the hospital’s recommendation that he wait until he has made a complete recovery. It is not that he has worsened. He’s healthy enough to be discharged right now.” Hm… methinks there’s a little overstating going on with both sides. On the upside, if that means Cha’s health is in better condition than the alarmist tone of some of those early articles, that can only be a good thing. His illness began on the 12th when he arrived in Japan and came down with a severe fever and allergies, and headed straight back home for treatment. As a result, the script of Athena was rewritten to accommodate the fact that he would miss a large chunk of filming, with some reports calling it a “state of emergency” for the drama. Other reports quote a production rep stating that Cha’s non-participation in Japan shoots is not a big deal and that they have wrapped up filming there. According to a source with Cha’s management, he plans to return to work in early October. Athena premieres on SBS in December. RELATED POSTS

My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: Episode 15 Posted: 29 Sep 2010 09:22 PM PDT I was expecting a lower-key, sort of mellow episode today, and sure enough, we get the typical Episode 15 lull. The episode contains some necessary moments and does truthfully need to go through some of this stuff before heading into the finale — otherwise the ending feels unearned and jammed together — but it also makes for a quieter watch. A calm before the storm, perhaps. Runaway explodes onto the scene with a 20% premiere Posted: 29 Sep 2010 05:02 PM PDT I’d expected high numbers for Runaway Plan B, but even so I’m surprised: 20.7% is an excellent start — hitting that number midway through would be a hit, but to get it in Episode 1 is rare. It speaks to the star power of Rain and answers the question of whether he’d be able to overcome the undercurrent of anti-fan sentiment that seems to dog him lately. (Of course, now the question is whether the drama will be able to maintain its strong kick-off. In any case, it is positioned nicely.) Bae Doo-na shows her sexy side for Vogue Posted: 29 Sep 2010 04:20 PM PDT Wow — Bae Doo-na usually takes on a more girl-next-door image, but she’s downright sexy for this new fashion spread for Vogue. It’s enough to make you double-take (at least I did), since I’m used to her casual, dressed-down look, such as in her drama God of Study earlier this year. She wears dramatic makeup here, which highlights her light complexion, though I’ve gotta say I hope this whole no-pants thing isn’t going to be a trend that catches on. Sungkyunkwan Scandal: Episode 8 Posted: 29 Sep 2010 11:07 AM PDT Dear Dr. Quinn, Is it possible to die of: (a) too much hiccupping; (b) curiosity and fright; (c) broken ideals; or (d) having one’s pride slashed to pieces? If yes to any of the above, please hurry to SKK as quickly as possible. There are four strapping young men (?) in need of your attention.
