Hyun Bin and Im Soo-jung pair up in new movie

Posted: 08 Sep 2010 05:45 AM PDT

Hyun Bin has stated his intention to enlist for his mandatory military service soon (some reports say November, other say next year), but has announced what will probably be his last movie before the army calls. It’s a low-budget film by director Lee Yoon-ki (My Dear Enemy) and co-stars Im Soo-jung (Jeon Woo Chi).

A separated couple is the focus of the story, which is still untitled. The shoot begins mid-September and is planned to take a mere two weeks to complete.

This may be his last film project, but there’s a good chance he’ll be squeezing in one more drama role, too. In August, a rep from Hyun Bin’s management stated that he plans to take the lead in SBS’s Secret Garden following this movie, although there were subsequent reports hedging and saying he is only “looking favorably” at the drama. Should he take it, he’d be replacing Jang Hyuk, who was cast early on, and joining Ha Ji-won.

Hyun Bin’s last project was Late Autumn, which he filmed in Seattle with Tang Wei. Im Soo-jung, meanwhile, is currently in the late stages of filming the movie Finding Kim Jong-wook, which co-stars Gong Yoo.

Song Joong-ki models for EZIO

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 08:30 PM PDT

This is a Song Joong-ki picture post. Which essentially means: no words necessary. Well, very few.

The following photos come from Song’s photo shoot for a menswear line for which he is brand model, EZIO. The images were posted on the online magazine for his management, SidusHQ, in their September issue.

Currently, Song is causing a good amount of buzz for his portrayal of a rich, indolent playboy in KBS’s new trendy-sageuk drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal.

Ratings creep upward for Sungkyunkwan Scandal

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 05:55 PM PDT

Well, with extensions confirmed for both Giant and Dong Yi, I think the best Sungkyunkwan Scandal can hope for is a strong third place showing in the Monday-Tuesday ratings race. And while the gains made this week are fairly small, at least they are encouraging: Week 2 brought in a 7.3% and 7.5%, up from last week’s twin 6.3% ratings.

By comparison, Dong Yi drew a 25.3% for its Tuesday episode, with Giant closing in on the gap with a 24.2%. Both dramas will be ending with 60 episodes, after being granted a 10-episode extension each.

But more than the uptick in the numbers, I’m finding Sungkyunkwan‘s story to be as refreshing and entertaining as I thought it last week. The series weaves bigger social, cultural, and political issues into what could be a frivolous trendy-drama story, adding some interesting depth to the plot. It doesn’t hurt that Yoo Ah-in takes a bigger role this week — he’d been the least featured last week but the most charismatic (in my opinion) of the four; the first two episodes focused more on series leads Park Min-young and Park Yoo-chun (aka Micky Yoochun), as well as the exceedingly engaging Song Joong-ki.

Character stills for Daemul

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 04:13 PM PDT

We’ve seen these cast members of Daemul in scenes from the drama, but here are four more character stills featuring the main four leads.

Go Hyun-jung, as you know by now, plays Korea’s first woman president, Seo Hye-rim, while Cha In-pyo portrays the politician with strong leadership abilities, Jang Tae-san.

Kwon Sang-woo is cast as the iron-willed Ha Do-ya, who overcomes hardship to become a passionate prosecutor. (Boo, no more gigolo Ha Ryu? Are they changing his character around to make more room for Cha? There’s been a lot less focus on Kwon lately, and I don’t think it’s just because of his brush with police; there was brief talk of Kwon quitting after the story broke, but the rumors were soon quashed.)

Last but not least, Lee Soo-kyung departs from her sunny, down-to-earth image to play a haughty careerwoman who got her MBA abroad, Jang Se-jin.

Daemul will take over the Wednesday-Thursday slot after My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho and premieres on October 6.

Oh Ji-ho sells “man kimchi”

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 12:10 PM PDT

For real, that’s what it’s called. That just cracks me up so much.

Actor Oh Ji-ho (Chuno) is getting into the kimchi business with three other young CEOs in a 100% handmade kimchi enterprise, named Namja Kimchi, or man kimchi.

Prior to the launching of the Namja Kimchi brand, the product has been market tested among consumers and bloggers. Even a parody video was released a few months ago to stir interest, which you can watch below. It’s admittedly pretty funny once you’re aware of the joke, and the point (other than creating buzz) is to take a decidedly different approach than traditional advertising has done. (It’s definitely a departure from the norm to market kimchi as a hip, metrosexual sort of brand.)

Giant gets an extension, Dong Yi considers its second

Posted: 07 Sep 2010 07:27 AM PDT

SBS’s Giant and MBC’s Dong Yi have been strong rivals in the ratings for months now, both bringing in ratings surpassing 20% (with the latter closer to 30%). Now both dramas have been extended, Dong Yi for the second time.

On September 7, a source with SBS’s drama department stated that Giant, originally scheduled for 50 episodes, will be given an added 10, and will now end on Episode 60. This means that the start date for the following drama, Athena, has been pushed back a month to December.

Dong Yi had already been given 10 extra episodes in July, is now contemplating an additional 10-episode extension that would bring the total number of episodes to 70.

In other news, Dong Yi resumed filming after the labor strike was resolved, and was only barely able to air its 49th episode on September 6. In fact, the episode only finished filming at 9 pm, and as of broadcast time (9:55 pm), the editors still hadn’t finished with the episode. The drama finally made it onto the air, but 15 minutes late. (The station aired public service advertising to fill the time.)

Viewers were apparently displeased with the drop in quality of the episode, which featured some odd editing and music choices. For example, the episode was a pretty big one, plotwise:
It featured the death of a character, the queen, played by Park Ha-sun. After an emotional send-off by Dong-yi and the king, her death was followed by… a trot song.
I was curious enough about the insane time-crunch antics to watch the episode, and thought it okay, though choppy. However, this choice was lambasted by viewers, and some are even demanding a re-edited broadcast.
