Continued strike puts pressure on Dong Yi, Kim Suro, Playful Kiss

Posted: 05 Sep 2010 05:56 AM PDT

Tensions seem to be increasing between the Korean Broadcasting, Film, Performing Artists Union and MBC as the two sides continue negotiations regarding the strike that is endangering the futures of several MBC dramas.

The matter centers around unpaid wages to the cast and crew of dramas being made by outside production companies. KBS and SBS came to settlements with the union, which spared their productions the threat of strike by their cast and crew members. However, MBC has yet to come to such an agreement.

Playful Kiss: Episode 2

Posted: 04 Sep 2010 08:00 PM PDT

Okay, I’ll give you this, Kim Hyun-joong. You are improved. I’m still not entirely sure that the entire range of human emotions is something you feel, but I can see that of what you’re feeling, you are showing. Jung So-min, on the other hand, is pretty much born to do this role. There’ve been a lot of comparisons to Yoon Eun-hye, because of her looks and the Goong similarities, but I think she’s got a different range than Yoon. Yoon is more understated as an actor—naturalistic, because she’s got more charisma than downright acting ability per se. She’s magnetic because she’s her, not X character.

Jung gets a little hammy, for sure, but she’s more in the acting her socks off camp, and because I’ve seen her in Bad Guy, I know that she’s capable of subtlety. She’s delightfully expressive, and totally readable, making her character endearing, even if her bumbling antics are a little staid. I think she’s got quite a career ahead of her, especially if she carries this drama on her shoulders the way she’s doing now.

Posted: 04 Sep 2010 11:48 AM PDT

Actor Park Shin-yang (Painter of the Wind, Lovers in Paris, The Letter) is making his drama comeback after a two-year hiatus.

Park faced some legal trouble with the Drama Association (a pay dispute regarding 2007′s War of Money) and was forced to take a hiatus. He’s returning after a two-year break, and the new project’s production company has no affiliation with the Drama Association, leaving Park in the clear.

Kang Hye-jung and Lee Yoon-ji in Proof

Posted: 04 Sep 2010 07:29 AM PDT

Kang Hye-jung (Old Boy, Flowers for My Life) and Lee Yoon-ji (Goong, Heading to the Ground) are headed to the stage this fall in an adaptation of the David Auburn play, Proof.

The actresses are double cast as the lead, Catherine, the daughter of a University of Chicago mathematician who dies after suffering from mental illness most of his life. The play follows Catherine’s struggle with the same debilitating illness, as well as the question of her own brilliance in the field of mathematics.

It’s a haunting story and an amazing play. It won a Pulitzer AND a Tony in 2001 after its Manhattan debut, and spurred countless adaptations. There’s also a film version by John Madden, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

This will be the theater debut for both actresses, who are in rehearsals now. It’ll be the first project for Kang since giving birth to her and Tablo’s first child in May. Lee’s last project was the recent weekend drama Dandelion Family.

Proof opens in Seoul on October 1.
