Strike looms for ten MBC, SBS dramas

Posted: 01 Sep 2010 02:30 AM PDT

As previously mentioned, the three major broadcasting companies (KBS, MBC, SBS) have been faced with a possibility of strike that would put some of their current dramas, all of whom are outsourced to outside production companies, on temporary hiatus. The issue at stake is unpaid wages to employees who are represented by the Korean Broadcasting, Film, and Performing Arts Labor Union.

Until the outstanding sum of more than 4 billion won is repaid, the union has taken the stance that they will refuse to allow continued participation with those productions. Representatives from the union gave a press conference on September 1, which was the deadline that the broadcasters were scrambling to meet in order to keep their affected dramas filming.

Sungkyunkwan Scandal: Episode 2

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 09:12 PM PDT

I liked Episode 2 even more than the first; now that we’re past some of the setup, I find these relationships quite compelling, and all the various possible entanglements are rife with possibility. Even the more clichéd elements (such as her cross-dressing at school) have different stakes here, since the consequences of being found out are so severe — it’s no longer a matter of losing the guy’s trust, but of failing your family and facing severe punishment, possibly execution.

Tonally, the relationship chemistry is more Coffee Prince than You’re Beautiful — both were fun dramas, but I like this better than the reverse scenario. And despite my misgivings about Yoochun’s acting in the first episode, I like him a lot more in this one, which is mostly because I LOVE his character.

SONG OF THE DAY

Sungkyunkwan Scandal OST – “찾았다” (I Found Her). The title means a generic “I found it,” but the lyrics go on to say that “I found my love, the one I was searching for.” [ Download ]

Su Ae and Yoo Ji-tae face off in Midnight FM

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 03:40 PM PDT

The trailer is out for thriller movie Midnight FM (which I’d previously mentioned as Late Night FM), which pits Su Ae (Athena) against Yoo Ji-tae (A Star’s Lover) in a battle of wills.

In the movie, Su Ae is the DJ of a late-night radio show who gets a call while she’s on the air, from a mysterious man (Yoo Ji-tae) who turns out to be a psycho killer. Su Ae must keep her cool as he directs her in an impossible mission in order to save the lives of her kidnapped family.

Personally, I’m not too interested in the plot, but this might be a film that’s more interesting for the acting. (Or not, if they fall short. But I like Su Ae and Yoo Ji-tae, and think it’s quite possible they’ll be better than the plot.) On the upside, the movie looks great on a visual level.

Midnight FM will open in October.

Dr. Champ makes do with fake Taereung

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 11:33 AM PDT

A few more stills have been released of SBS’s Dr. Champ, which stars Kim So-yeon and Uhm Tae-woong as orthopedic surgeons at the Olympic training facility, Taereung National Village. Jung Kyeo-woon is a national judo athlete who trains there and develops a romantic storyline with Kim. In these stills, Jung’s character saves his doctor (Kim) from being injured in a hit and run.

Jung has been practicing judo for upwards of six hours daily, while Kim said, “I’ve always wanted to play a doctor at least once, so I’m very happy to take off the prosecutor’s robe and put on the doctor’s gown. In order to portray the various aspects of the medical profession realistically, like treatment and surgery, I’m studying really hard.”
