Special re-edit of Park Bo-young and Kim Soo-hyun’s Jungle Fish

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 09:43 PM PDT

More than two years after it was first aired, KBS’s award-winning youth drama Jungle Fish is getting a re-edit into a movie version, and will get a special theatrical release.

This comes in conjunction with the opening of the second season, which kicks off this week and features some current rising stars, including T-ara’s Jiyeon, Ghost‘s (and Oh My Lady’s) Hong Jong-hyun, and MBLAQ’s Lee Joon. Jungle Fish 2 will air 8 episodes, the first premiering on September 25.

The original Jungle Fish was praised for tackling a serious issue in a fresh way, bringing together the topics of school cheating, competitive academic standards, and interactive blogging. Plus, three of its stars have gone on to greater success since starring in it: Park Bo-young, Kim Soo-hyun, and 2PM’s Chansung.

Kim Jae-wook joins Mary Stayed Out All Night

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 05:49 PM PDT

…which will now be known as The Greatest Trendy Drama Casting EVAR. Okay, maybe just this year. But oh, happy day!

Jang Geun-seok AND Moon Geun-young AND Kim Jae-wook, together in a love triangle?? Where are you, November?

Mary Stayed Out All Night is the manhwa-adapted KBS drama that gets the heroine tangled up in not one but TWO contract marriages. Writing is In Eun-ah (Goong); directing is Hong Seok-gu (Kyung-sook, Kyung-sook’s Father).

Kim’s Jung-in character is a “perfect” guy with the kdrama triple threat of brains, beauty, and money, with whom Mary has been betrothed since childhood. Complications arise when she meets Mu-gyul, Jang Geun-seok’s free-spirited hippie/indie rock singer character. Yes, Kim is technically the second lead, but I’m expecting this to be an epic love triangle — at least I hope so. (The best love triangles are the ones that give me the most trouble deciding who to root for, because I like that angst to be as organic as possible.)

Kim Jae-wook made an impression with his pretty face in 2007′s Coffee Prince as “Waffle Sun-ki,” but has been, in my mind, just another beautiful celeb who had yet to prove any acting talent. That was until he took on the nuanced, volatile, and vulnerable character of the damaged chaebol in this year’s Bad Guy, and knocked that role out of the park. I was thrilled to see him break out and show real charisma and acting talent, which may have not been polished but was all the more compelling for its raw intensity.

I can’t WAIT to see this drama now!

Mary Stayed Out All Night airs in KBS’s Monday-Tuesday slot following Sungkyunkwan Scandal, and premieres November 8.

Happy Chuseok week: A note about TV programming

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 03:23 PM PDT

As you have probably heard, this week is Chuseok week in Korea, which is the biggest holiday of the year. As the harvest festival, it’s akin to the Western Thanksgiving; the actual day of Chuseok this year is Wednesday, September 22, but the overall holiday spans several days, which often gets stretched into a whole week of traveling home to see the folks, pigging out on songpyun rice cakes, and enjoying a few days off from the usual grind.

What does that mean for television? Well, first off there will be no My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho airing on Wednesday, which will be host to lots of special family-friendly Chuseok programming instead. But fear not, both new episodes (13 & 14) WILL air this week — just both on Thursday.

It should be interesting to watch how Playful Kiss does this week — not only is Baker King Kim Tak-gu off the air, on Wednesday it will have no competition from Gumiho, either, since both SBS and KBS will be airing Chuseok specials. On Thursday, it’ll be up against Gumiho again.

This might give it a chance to pick itself up, get back on its feet, and grab a few new viewers just before Runaway premieres next week. Maybe.

I Am Legend: Episode 14

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 10:47 AM PDT

Ah – much better. I don’t know about the rest of you, but this episode was like a breath of fresh air for me, just as music was a place for the girls to “breathe” outside of their socially-accepted-other lives. Maybe my standards for “good” is a little low (and it has been in the last few weeks) but I am much relieved that we are moving forward.

Plus – Hwa Ja has a solo! What more can you ask for?

Queen of Reversals begins filming

Posted: 20 Sep 2010 07:45 AM PDT

MBC’s sequel/spinoff series Queen of Reversals, which hopes to capitalize on the popularity of 2009′s Queen of Housewives, began filming on September 18 and released these first stills.

In the drama, Kim Nam-joo and Jung Jun-ho play husband and wife, and seeing as how the atmosphere on set was described as harmonious, I’m guessing the scene pictured represents a lull in the relationship. The two characters marry rather quickly and find that marriage brings a host of new challenges that they hadn’t anticipated. The title refers to the series of “life reversals” they encounter along the way. Lest that sound too serious, fear not; the drama is touted as a light and energetic romantic comedy — its just that in this case, the bulk of the comic-romantic antics take place on the other side of the wedding altar, rather than leading up to it.
