Kwon Sang-woo in Daemul

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 07:01 AM PDT

Now it’s Kwon Sang-woo‘s turn to be featured in new Daemul stills. (His co-stars Go Hyun-jung and Cha In-pyo were the focus of the drama’s first stills released just a day prior.)

I’m a little confused with the description of his character: he’s a passionate prosecutor, Ha Do-ya, who is in a one-sided love with Seo Hye-rim (Go Hyun-jung), the former broadcast announcer who is elected to the presidency. Kwon had been announced early on to be taking on a gigolo role, Ha Ryu.

So, I looked up descriptions of the original comic, which describe Ha Do-ya as the older brother to Ha Ryu. Here’s the original story (more or less):

My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: Episode 7

Posted: 01 Sep 2010 09:20 PM PDT

Such a sweet episode — I awwed repeatedly throughout. I suppose this is where the romantic angle gets going in earnest, but truth be told that doesn’t even matter that much to me. I’ve gotten so much delight out of the growing friendly rapport between Mi-ho and Dae-woong and the mythology aspect that the standard romance stuff is icing on the cake.

Playful Kiss makes a dismal premiere (ouch!)

Posted: 01 Sep 2010 03:22 PM PDT

OUCHHHHH. Even for those who don’t put much stock in drama ratings, this has to hurt: Playful Kiss premiered today with a painfully low rating, 3.5%. That’s even lower than the flop it replaced, Road No. 1, which ended on an already low 5.3%.

Unsurprisingly, competitor KBS Baker King Kim Tak-gu held a distant lead with 44%. SBS’s My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho stayed in second place with an 11.9%.

As in any discussion of ratings, please note that I make no judgments on quality of content. I’m still eager to dive in and watch the drama, and my anticipation of its story and appeal remain undiminished. It’s just that, 3.5%, well… that’s harsh, man. I wonder if rerun numbers on the weekend will be appreciably better.

To be honest, I was expecting Kiss to premiere in third place, but I thought it would be a lot closer than that. Perhaps idol power is not what it once was — or maybe it never had quite the pull that the media hyped it to have, with similarly low numbers for the anticipated Sungkyunkwan Scandal (6.3%) on Monday.

(I know you’re probably eager to talk about the episode, so can I just ask that you keep the BIG spoilers out of it? I’m looking forward to watching the premiere and would love to let plot surprises have their intended effect.)

Daemul (finally!) begins filming

Posted: 01 Sep 2010 12:45 PM PDT

Who knew this day would ever come? After numerous delays and production problems, Daemul has begun filming and released its first stills. Pictured are Go Hyun-jung, who plays the country’s first woman president, and Cha In-pyo as a politician, in a scene where their realistic argument “sparked fireworks,” according to a producer.

Go said laughingly about the shoot: “My character came to debate a differing opinion with [Cha's character] Kang Tae-san, but Cha In-pyo is so good-looking that my feelings relaxed and I found it difficult to argue with him.”

Seo Woo and Yoo Seung-ho as a couple

Posted: 01 Sep 2010 07:35 AM PDT

Wow, straight from high school slacker-turned-test-rocking-genius (God of Study) to wealthy heir and husband to Seo Woo? Yoo Seung-ho, you sure are moving up in the world.

New MBC special weekend drama A Woman Only Loves Once (I OBJECT!) has cast Yoo Seung-ho as the male lead, a chaebol son with a twisty birthright (of course). Seo Woo has been confirmed as his love interest: an actress with a past, who ends up in a scandal, and therefore married to Yoo’s character.

But…they’re so wee!

The series also stars Shin Eun-kyung as the string-pulling mistress-of-doom, and is set up to be a 50-episode epic tale of the lives of the filthy rich. Er, what’s new? Frankly, I’m a little tired of rich people and their birth secrets. Can’t Rich Daddy just keep it in his pants?

Hopefully the drama will do something positive for these two actors, who are fantastically expressive. If they end up married for the bulk of the run, that could be an interesting dynamic to explore.

A Woman Only Loves Once will air on MBC in October, following Kim Suro.
