My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho: Episode 8

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 08:22 PM PDT

“She works hard for the money / So haaaard for it honey / She works hard for the money / So you better treat her right.” Never truer words, my friend. This episode, Mi-ho learns the value of a Dollar Won, and Dae-woong learns the value of a gift from the heart.

The last episode’s Little Mermaid metaphor just worked on all counts for me, but more than the metaphor itself, I loved Dae-woong stepping up to be a hero, to shield her heart from the tragic ending in her fairy tale. In this episode he continues to step up when it counts, and Mi-ho? She just continues to be awesome.

MBC’s Dong Yi also halts filiming

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 06:08 PM PDT

Historical drama Dong Yi is the second show whose filming has been interrupted by the union strike over unpaid crew and cast wages, following Gloria.

On September 3, union representatives went to the set to talk to the cast of Dong Yi, who agreed to refrain from participating in shoots that day, and filming subsequently halted.

The actors and crew members involved are part of the Korean Broadcasting, Film, Performing Artists Labor Union. At the center of the issue are the wages that remain unpaid as of July 31 in dramas that come outside production companies. Initially thirteen shows were involved, but with KBS and SBS coming to settlement agreements with the union, only MBC remains with four of its outsourced series.

This throws Dong Yi into a tough spot, as it is late in its run and has been enjoying the #1 ratings spot on Mondays and Tuesdays for months. Furthermore, Dong Yi already reportedly received its scripts late, so it has no time to spare.

Both Dong Yi and Gloria are negotiating to settle the problem, so I’m betting we can expect filming to resume pretty quickly; I can’t see MBC letting this drag on and endangering their shows.

Playful Kiss ratings round two: 3.7%

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 04:30 PM PDT

I know some viewers were holding out for a marked improvement in Playful Kiss‘s numbers given its surprisingly poor start yesterday, but alas, it was not to be. Episode 2 didn’t fare much better, following Episode 1′s 3.5% rating with a 3.7%.

Competitor drama Baker King Kim Tak-gu hit yet another series high at 45%, while My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho held firm with 12%.

Most of you probably don’t care about ratings numbers, and I don’t use them to gauge a show’s quality. These days there are other ways to catch dramas, such as rebroadcasts and online, and no doubt younger audiences gravitate toward those alternative methods. Still, the ratings are important in determining ad revenues, and that, as we know, can be significant. Heck, the current union strike is happening because these companies have no money to pay their actors because they’re spending more than they’re making. There are other residual benefits as well, with high-rated hits bringing in more CF opportunities for its cast. (Expect to see a LOT of Baker King‘s Yoon Shi-yoon in the near future!)

For its own sake, I hope Playful Kiss can hang in there until Baker King wraps. True, its successor, Rain‘s Runaway, may also provide competition, but at least they’ll be on more level playing ground. And there’s always the export market.

Filming halts on Gloria due to union strike

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 03:22 PM PDT

Gloria is the first drama production to halt filming as a result of the union strike (details here), after the cast decided to follow the union’s stance and refused to shoot on September 2.

KBS and now SBS have settled the unpaid wage issue with the broadcasting/film labor union, but that leaves MBC still trying to find a way to resolve their outstanding payments. Four productions are at issue; other than Gloria, they are Playful Kiss, Kim Suro, and Dong Yi.

On the afternoon of the 2nd, union reps came to the Gloria set at the MBC Dream Center in Ilsan to talk with the actors face to face. Producers had intended to film that day, but after the meeting ended at 3:30 pm, the entire cast — including leads Bae Doo-na, Lee Chun-hee, and Seo Ji-seok — refused to participate. At 7:15 pm, the filming crew decided to call it a day.

An MBC representative stated that this weekend’s episodes of Gloria will air as planned. (Presumably, those scenes have finished shooting.) However, if this strike continues, next weekend’s broadcast may be endangered.

Kim Min-sun’s new name and new drama

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 12:06 PM PDT

Actress Kim Min-sun was already a decade into her career when she decided to change her name last year — not just a stage name, but her actual real one. Her next project will be the first where she acts under her new name, Kim Gyu-ri.

The reason for her change? Kim explains that Kim Min-sun is her legal name, and it’s also the name she is credited under in projects like ero-sageuk Portrait of a Beauty and drama series Loveholic. However, her family has always called her by the name Gyu-ri. Kim is a fourth daughter, and at the time of her birth her parents wanted a son, so they entered the name Min-sun into the official registry. However, they’ve always called her Gyu-ri, so this change is to make it official.

The funny thing is, there’s already another actress with the name Kim Gyu-ri, who happens to be the same age as this one. (She’s pictured below, at left. You may recognize “the original Kim Gyu-ri,” as some have taken to calling her to avoid confusion, from dramas like I Can’t Stop and Lovers. It must chafe the first Kim Gyu-ri to suddenly be thrust into the backseat, since Kim Min-sun is the more famous actor.)

Making things even funnier, Kim Gyu-ri is actually a stage name for the other actress — whose real name is Kim Moon-sun. HAHA.
