[News] YG Entertainment announces Big Bang comeback

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 06:45 AM PST

Top Korean agency YG Entertainment has announced that boy band Big Bang will make their long-awaited comeback to the local music scene, as their original five-member band and also through solo and duo albums.

YG's CEO and founder Yang Hyuk-suk wrote on the official YG Life blog site(http://www.yg-life.com) on Monday that members G-Dragon and T.O.P will be the first to return, releasing songs "High High" and "Oh Yeah" on December 15 as a duo while their full-length album, featuring 11 tracks, will hit stores a week later.

Yang then wrote that member Seungri will follow next with the release of his solo digital single on January 3 and the boys will make their full-fledged comeback as Big Bang on February 1.

Last week, YG Life had unveiled a digital clock timer indicating that an announcement was going to be made over the weekend which fans and industry sources speculated as the return of Big Bang or the official U.S. debut of girl group 2NE1.

Big Bang, discovered and trained by major talenthouse YG Entertainment, is known as one of the biggest names in the Korean pop industry, releasing hit songs "Dirty Cash," "With U," "Lies" and "Haru Haru."

The last album that the group released in Korea was "REMEMBER," featuring the title track "Red Sunset" two years ago.

The group then successfully crossed over to the Japanese music market in June of last year with their debut single "My Heaven" which reached No. 3 on the prestigious Oricon daily singles chart and toured three cities in the country which attracted a total of 60,000 fans.

They have released other singles in Japan such as "Tell Me Goodbye" and "Beautiful Hangover" and performed on the main stage at the Summer Sonic Festival this August.

Big Bang is currently gearing up for the "2010 YG Family Concert" to be held on December 4 and 5 with fellow labelmates 2NE1, Gummy and Psy.

[News] 10asiae- JYJ holds concert in Seoul over weekend

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 06:15 AM PST

Boy band JYJ performs at the group's first concert titled "JYJ Concert in Seoul" at the Main Stadium of the Olympic Park in Jamsil of Seoul, South Korea on November 27, 2010. [Chae Ki-won/10Asia]
"Getting struck by wind is said to happen only to those who are flying. I believe that the many winds that we are being struck with are blessings in disguise, meaning that we will fly high up." That is what JYJ member Junsu during their two-day concert titled "JYJ Worldwide Concert in Seoul" held on November 27 and 28 at the Main Olympic Stadium in Jamsil. And the 'wind' he spoke of did not refer to the hail and strong wind that took down the large tent that was installed over the roof of the stadium ahead of the first day of the concert. Former TVXQ members Jaejung, Yuchun and Junsu left the band after filing a lawsuit against SM Entertainment last summer asking their exclusive contract with the agency to be nullified after which SM filed for injunction on the three's release of their worldwide album "The Beginning" in October although they later withdrew it. While the lawsuit regarding the contract with SM is ongoing, TVXQ's two remaining members U-know Yunho and Max Changmin are set to resume their singing careers next year under the name of TVXQ.

Despite all the ups and downs they have been through, JYJ delayed the starting time of 7 p.m. for their concert on November 27 by an hour since they had to take down the tent and the 35,000 local and international fans had to endure the below-zero temperature. However, the stage was enough to show off the elaborate dance moves and singing skills of the JYJ members whose performances were of tracks from their album "The Beginning" which features works from world-renowned musicians such as Kanye West who composed "Ayyy girl," Rodney Jenkins who produced "Empty," as well as unreleased songs "9," "Fallen Leaves" and "Mission Make It." Each member gave solo performances as well, with Yuchun taking the stage to give his rendition of "Drunken Truth" by duo Exhibition, Junsu performing with a string orchestra for "I Can Soar" and Jaejung singing "To You Its Goodbye" from the soundtrack to KBS' drama "Sungkyunkwan Scandal." The dance performance, which was directed by Jeri Slaughter who has worked with top global artists Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera, left a deep impression with its extravagant lights and dynamics moves which was reminiscent of Cirque du Soleil's shows. They also successfully delivered a relatively clear and rich sound even though they were limited in terms of location with the concert being held in a stadium -- faults were pointed out regarding the sound during their showcase held at Korea University's Hwaseong Tiger Dome last month. However, it could not be helped that there was a limit to them conveying the emotions felt in the songs from their album "The Beginning" which is in English and it was inevitable that their new songs, unveiled for the first time at the concert, created an awkward atmosphere.

But of course these inconveniences came about also because JYJ is a team that is just 'beginning.' The lyrics to their new song "Pierrot" which say, "I have my own thoughts and my own life. I don't want to remember those times which seemed like prison. Forever bye bye bye," seemed to be directed towards their previous agency as well as saying goodbye to their past as TVXQ. It may also refer to how they cannot and will not sing the songs that they sang as TVXQ and how they are singers will their first full-length album even though they made a debut seven years ago. Hence, after going through trial and error, they showed quick improvement on their show on November 28 compared to the previous day, drawing reaction from the audience on the second and third floor from warmer weather, better arrangement of the floor seats and usage of a subsidiary stage. In that sense, the most important thing that the members of JYJ may need is time to build up a repertoire that is right for them.

[NEWS] Music dramas take on high school and college

Posted: 29 Nov 2010 03:30 AM PST

Next year, the Korean drama industry goes neo-retro with two music-centric series ― "Dream High" (a working title) and "What's Up" ― bringing the classic song-and-dance genre to the small screen.

The success of "SuperstarK" ― a reality show that is oft-described as the Korean version of "American Idol" ― signals the time is ripe for such performance-heavy dramas.

The question is: Will audiences take to the genre as a miniseries?

While "Glee," an American television show about a glee club of teenage underdogs, became a major hit when it reeled out catchy song-and-dance numbers in 2009, it failed to make a similar impact on Korean viewers when it aired on cable channel tvN the same year.

When SBS put out "He's Beautiful!" and "I'm Legend," two series that centered on bands and included music performances, both failed to bring in high viewer numbers.

BIGBANG member Dae-sung draws from his musical theater experience to belt out tunes and flash a move or two in his upcoming music-centric drama "What's Up."

The less-than-promising track record did not stop music mogul Park Jin-young and Hallyu star Bae Yong-joon from vesting their interests in "Dream High" or production company Zero Plus from creating a drama about aspiring musical actors with "What's Up."

So with two music dramas on the way, what should viewers expect?

Lots of singing and dancing ― but in different formats
, according to the shows' PR officials.

Because "What's Up" is about a group of university students majoring in musical theater, theatrically-stylized numbers ― including pieces from major musicals like "Jekyll and Hyde" ― will bring a bit of old school pizazz to the small screen.

Meanwhile, it looks like "Dream High" is aiming for something more K-pop-heavy. According to the show's representative, viewers will be tuning into brand new songs
, freshly produced by Holym.

Holym is a joint venture formed by Park Jin-young's JYP Entertainment and Bae Yong-joon's agency, Keyeast, of which Bae is a major shareholder. The company will be co-producing "Dream High" with entertainment goliath CJ Media.

In other words, there is a good chance that Park's expertise with churning out chart-topping singles will come in handy for producing "Dream High's" soundtrack, and with JYPE's idols ― four have been cast in the drama ― likely to be performing these songs onscreen, "Dream High" will probably have K-pop fans glued to their seats every Monday and Tuesday night, when the series starts airing on KBS 2 TV on Jan. 3.

Park is also acting as music-and-dance producer for the series, further expanding his influence over the sound and look of the routines, though there will be a separate music director, said the PR representative.

But just because both dramas feature a lot of performances, don't expect classic Hollywood-style numbers where characters burst into song and dance spontaneously. The performances in both "Dream High" and "What's Up" will be presented as performances within the drama, which means no one will be "singin' in the rain."

In "What's Up," the protagonists are university students majoring in musical theater. In "Dream High" characters are high school students attending a school of arts famed for producing some of Korea's finest stars.

So for both shows, singing and dancing will be a natural part of the classroom. For "Dream High" characters will also be performing within the context of concerts.

The similarities pretty much end there.

If "Dream High" has all the hallmarks of a major production backed by industry giants and fronted by an all-star line-up of K-pop stars ― including 2PM's Taec-yeon and Woo-young, Miss A's Suzy and T-ara's Ham Eun-jung and more ― then "What's Up" should feel more like a well-funded, ambitious, indie-style endeavor.

There is only one major K-pop star, Big Bang's Dae-sung, on board.

The PR for "What's Up" is being conducted in a trendy, get-straight-to-the-masses manner
, via YouTube, where an eye-catching teaser chock full of dramatic dance scenes and a dash of melodramatic angst drew over 200,000 hits.

"We're preparing the second teaser, which will feature behind-the-scenes clips of the cast receiving training for the drama," the drama's PR representative said over the phone.

Furthermore, "What's Up" also publicly held open auditions through micro-blogging service me2DAY, inviting audiences to emotionally invest in and also take a stab at starring in the drama themselves.

According to a production company representative, a total of 10 finalists ― whose pictures are posted on the me2DAY audition site ― made it through.

"Dream High" also held open auditions, but only one, a b-boy, out of about 1,500 made it through ― a result that somewhat undermines the appeal of open auditions, where the masses feel more than a few could be given a fair chance at fame.

But while "What's Up" may have a huge online following through its various Internet outlets, the drama has yet to establish a timeslot and broadcasting network, leaving audiences wondering when they will finally get to see what all the hoopla is about.

According to the PR representative, plans are to get it airtime in the first half of 2011, which means that filming for the drama, which started this July, should be over by then.

With "Dream High" likely to hit audiences first, "What's Up" may be hard-pressed to draw in ratings, once the shine of the TV musical genre has worn off.

But what the drama may lack in star power and timeliness, it promises to make up for with authenticity, talent and top notch technology.

Famed "Hourglass" scriptwriter Song Ji-na will be fleshing out the characters and adding meat to the story.

The drama will be shot on a state-of-the-art Red One camera at the Chungkang College of Cultural Industries School of Musical Theater, with the college's own musical theater students rounding out the cast to give that extra, believable "oomph" to the routines.

According to a production company representative, a tight team that includes a music director, a vocal teacher and a Chungkang College professor in charge of choreography will be putting out the song-and-dance numbers.

Furthermore, Dae-sung, who racked up musical theater experience in "Cats" and "Shouting," will be backed by musical actors Oh Man-seok and Jo Jeong-seok.

The whole setup recalls "Glee," whose success is due in part to the synergy of choreographer Zach Woodlee and a cast filled with actors and actresses off Broadway.

Can viewers expect to see traces of "Glee" and musical films like the Disney Channel's "High School Musical" franchise in "What's Up"?

The production company representative said over the phone that those shows had influenced them a little.

But don't expect a tale of underdogs who find solace in song-and-dance, warned the representative; "What's Up" has its own story to tell.
