Im Joo-hwan joins Ryu Seung-beom and Younha in film project

Posted: 16 Nov 2010 05:24 AM PST

Im Joo-hwan fans, rejoice! 2011 looks like it’ll be a busy year for the rising star, as he adds a film to his resume (in addition to upoming drama What’s Up). The movie is titled Life Is Beautiful, and has already drawn some notice for casting prolific film actor Ryu Seung-beom (Bad Deal) and singer Younha.

Ryu plays a former baseball player who quit the sport after his hot temper led to an accident, and now works at an insurance company. Part of his job is to keep his clients from committing suicide, which sounds like a depressing job but seems, based on the film’s description, like it will take a lightly humorous “human drama” approach. Younha plays an aspiring singer.

Mary Stayed Out All Night: Episode 3

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 09:20 PM PST

More cuteness abounds. Honestly, this drama can feel rather average whenever the scenes don’t involve both main characters, so I can see why it’s struggling to gain ground in the ratings (today’s episode had a 9%). But whenever Jang Geun-seok and Moon Geun-young are together, they just crackle with adorable chemistry.

Secret Garden: Episode 2

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 03:14 PM PST

I’m really digging the vibe of this show, which is a total surprise, given that it was promoted in such an ambiguous way, claiming to be of seventeen different genres. But I pretty much love the characters from the get-go, because they’re a breath of fresh air in the k-drama landscape. I especially love that Joo-won is a neurotic freakshow. Funny Binnie, you’re back! We’ve missed you!

Park Ye-jin fights for Song Seung-heon in My Princess

Posted: 15 Nov 2010 10:52 AM PST

Park Ye-jin (Queen Seon-deok) will be joining the production of romantic-comedy drama My Princess as the girlfriend to rich boy Song Seung-heon, the grandson and heir to Daehan Group. Park’s father is the head secretary of Daehan Group’s CEO, while she works at a museum.

Since Kim Tae-hee has already been cast as the lead, this means that their relationship is doomed; Park will inevitably lose out to her rival. But don’t feel too bad for her; she’s a “femme fatale” type of careerwoman who has her eye on success and uses Song Seung-heon’s love as a strategic advantage. At least, until another woman enters the picture and gets her jealousy rarin’: Kim Tae-hee plays an ordinary woman who becomes “Korea’s princess” — and in this drama, we mean princess literally, not as a nickname. Park Ye-jin is spurred into action to reclaim Song Seung-heon, but we know that it’ll be too late.

Given the description, the character seems like a thoroughly unlikable type, so I’m banking on Park Ye-jin to make her the love-to-hate-her type, which is ever so much more fun than the standard hate-her-get-her-off-my-screen kind of manipulating meddler.

Directing My Princess is PD Kwon Seok-jang of romantic comedies Pasta and What’s Up Fox, and co-writing is Kim Eun-sook, who just premiered her current project, the fun and zippy Secret Garden. The other writer, Jang Young-shil, also worked on writer Kim’s On Air and Lovers.

My Princess will air in January as a Wednesday-Thursday MBC show. (Gulp. Will it break the so-called curse? Or have we lost another one to the MBC midweek black hole?)
