Kim Heung-soo added to President

Posted: 25 Nov 2010 05:12 AM PST

KBS’s upcoming politics-themed drama President has added Kim Heung-soo to its cast, which piques my interest because this guy can be a pretty sexy bastard onscreen (which is the description that came most often to mind when watching romantic-comedy drama Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang, where he played a scheming villain).

It’s fitting, then, that he should play a confident Casanova here, described as free-thinking, frank, and fashionable. His Ki Soo-chan character is a political consultant who takes on the job of campaign manager for a presidential candidate. Though he starts off in the opposition’s camp, he’s scouted to the other side because of he’s just that good.

That presidential candidate will be played by veteran actor and sageuk king Choi Su-jong (Dae Jo Young, Comrades), which makes this a reunion for him and Kim Heung-soo six years after they acted together in Emperor of the Sea. Notably, Choi’s real-life wife Ha Hee-ra will act as his onscreen first lady.

President will follow Runaway Play B, which means that it’ll air directly opposite SBS’s big presidential drama, Daemul, for a few weeks before that drama wraps. Normally I’d say that there ain’t nobody in the K-drama world who could put up a fight against Go Hyun-jung when she’s on a hot streak (and I wouldn’t count on this drama toppling Daemul from its perch), but Choi Su-jong is a pretty formidable challenger in terms of name recognition, experience, and gravitas. While Dameul seems to be heading into makjang territory, I’m very curious to see how President approaches the subject from a different angle in devoting more time to the process of getting the lead into the Blue House.

President’s first episode airs December 8.

Tamra the Island: Episode 16 (Final)

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 08:20 PM PST

So here we are. The finale. Tamra, you have been an excellent drama. While obviously the (cursed) cut hurt the ending, I still utterly adore you. And utter adoration is really all you can ask.

[As this is the final Tamra recap, I'd like to give nattacatta a big thank-you to taking on this project and seeing it through to the end. I hope you, like me, have enjoyed reading these recaps, which gave us a chance to re-live one of last year's underappreciated surprises. -javabeans]

Love transcends time in Try to Remember

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 03:21 PM PST

Fans of Coffee House’s endearingly awkward Dong-wook, played by Park Jae-jung, will be happy to know he’s starring in a movie — his big-screen debut — which opens this week. It’s a romance drama with Hero’s Yoon So-yi whose Korean title is literally Have We Met?, though its English-language title is officially Try To Remember.

The film is described as a “Joseon version of Ghost” and incorporates a famous true story known as the “Mother of Won-yi” incident; in 1998, an old letter was discovered at the construction site of a housing development in Andong.

In the trailer (watch below), Eun-kyo (Park), a famous photographer, travels to Andong upon hearing of an opening for a photography instructor. When he asks In-woo (Yoon) curiously, “Have we met before?” she looks at him blankly and says no, but he can’t shake the feeling of deja vu. Eun-kyo comes to recognize her as the woman he’s seen numerous times in his dreams — dreams and memories are big motifs here — and tries to understand how that can be.

My Princess begins rehearsals

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 09:12 AM PST

Earlier this week, star-studded rom-com My Princess held its first script reading, and I would’ve given my left foot to be a fly on the wall of that room. Because if it went the way I imagine, this drama is going to be one epic crash and burn.

Please, someone tell me who thought it’d be a good idea to have Kim Tae-hee (IRIS) and Song Seung-heon (East of Eden) deliver dialogue written by the most verbose of drama writers. Writer Kim Eun-sook (Secret Garden, On Air) is known for her “brand-name/designer dialogue” [명품 대사], which is characterized by fast-talking witty banter, delivered a mile a minute. It’s what you’d call delivery-dependent dialogue, because without good actors behind it, the writing feels deliberate, and labored. Imagine lesser actors behind the banter in Secret Garden. Characters like Joo-won who spit miles of vitriol but convey depth underneath the surface are not possible without the acting chops to back it up.

You see my concern with this drama?

[Commercial break] Sponsor and giveaway notice

Posted: 24 Nov 2010 09:00 AM PST

This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Intel.

All right folks, time for a word on behalf of our sponsors at Blogher, who contacted me about doing a review (and giveaway) on a laptop powered by The Intel® Core™ i5 processor and an Intel® Wireless Display (aka WiDi) adaptor allowing me to use my HDTV as a monitor.

One of the questions I get asked the most about running Dramabeans is how I manage to watch and recap so many dramas all the time, in addition to keeping the blog running on a daily basis. My response is in the FAQ page, but I suspect people want a more serious answer. So I’ll just say: It’s not easy. Girlfriday and I both probably spend a lot more time on the site than could be considered healthy (it’s all for you!), and on a few occasions I’ve made the conscious effort to scale back in order to balance out my life — but ultimately, I always come crawling back like a junkie in need of her next kdrama fix. Which isn’t even so much a metaphor as it is an accurate description of life. What can ya do? We’re both workaholics, perfectionists, and completists. That means I spend a LOT of quality time with my computer.

So you can imagine how I jumped at the chance to review a brand-spankin’ new laptop provided by Intel. On top of that, Blogher is giving away a $250 gift card from Best Buy to a Dramabeans reader, plus you’ll have a chance to win a laptop for yourselves. Find out the details here!
