[News] S. Korean pop culture widespread in N. Korea: defector group

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 04:31 AM PST

South Korea's pop culture and fashion trends have increasingly gained popularity in North Korea, with a growing inflow of pirated DVDs and TV dramas smuggled from China, a Seoul-based defector group said Friday.

The People for Successful Corean Reunification said the Korean "Hallyu" wave, a reference to the surging popularity of South Korean pop culture, has even hit a large population of the reclusive and tightly controlled communist state.

"People living in coastal areas in South Hwanghae Province can easily watch South Korean broadcasting, and some residents said they even watched the live coverage of the inaugural address of President Lee Myung-bak," a 38-year-old defector, who fled from the North last year, said in video shown during a seminar. "I think 99 percent of North Korean residents have seen South Korean dramas at least once or twice."

A North Korean defector from Shiniju, a northern gateway to the Chinese mainland, said the capitalist South's affluent lifestyle inspired him to flee from his homeland last year.

"I was intrigued by the fact that South Korea shown in the drama was so much different from where I lived, and I hoped to go to South Korea," said the 23-year-old, identified by his alias Lee Seong-il. "In the case of youngsters, it is easy to tell whether they have watched Korean dramas by their hairstyle. No matter how (authorities) instruct them to wear their hairstyles like 'socialists,' it is virtually useless."

Access to foreign pop culture is strictly banned for ordinary people in the isolated nation, with violators facing hefty fines or jail terms.

Kang Dong-wan, a researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said most of the videos were smuggled from China, the North's neighbor and major trade partner, with loose control over business activities near border areas.

"As (authorities) loosen control over moving regions for business purposes, distribution of videos (like South Korean dramas) is increasing," Kang said. "Not only residents in the border areas with China but also people across the nation, including Pyongyang, are believed to be watching these kinds of videos."

[news] Rain Wraps Up "Fugitive Plan B"...What's Next?

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 03:36 AM PST

With only one episode left to air for the KBS Wednesday/Thursday drama "Fugitive Plan B", Rain made an appearance in Yeouido on December 6th to talk about his experience and what's coming up for the world star.

He said, "Although 'Fugitive' didn't rank too high in terms of viewers' ratings, we did have a diehard fan base. It helped me to see a new side of me as a person and I think it was a drama that gradually earned the recognition of viewers. Although ratings are important, I also think the relationships formed between people and bettering yourself as a human being is important. I want to thank the producer Kwak Jeong-hwan for always greeting me with a smile and supporting me despite the various hardships that popped up during this drama. I'm thankful to Lee Na-young too for giving me strength as her opposite male co-star. She told me that if I let the negative personal issues get to me on set, I'm the one that's losing in the end. Overall, this was a project that allowed me to really look back on myself and my actions."

The filming of "Fugitive" took place while there were allegations of gambling and a significant amount of debt for the singer/actor.

As for what lays ahead for the big star Rain revealed, "The timing worked out for me to shoot one more Hollywood movie and then I'll enlist in the military towards the latter half of next year."

[news] SNSD, Plans for a Follow-Up Song 'No,' Variety Shows 'Yes'

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 03:10 AM PST

[Edaily SPN Reporter Park Eunbyul]

Rather than promoting a follow-up song, group SNSD will showcase their charms through variety show programs.

On the 9th, a representative from their company SM Entertainment stated that SNSD will not promote a follow-up song from their mini-album Hoot. They said that it will be difficult to do so due to member Tiffany's leg injury.

On the 14th of last month, Tiffany fell and hurt her knee during a performance of Hoot. Due to the doctor's advice that she should rest for four weeks in order to heel, Tiffany has been resting and wears a cast on her leg. The company has decided that even if she is allowed to take off the cast, it will be too much to jump right into performing onstage.

For a while, SNSD will be able to show different sides of themselves to their fans through variety shows rather than through music promotions.

Already SNSD has been focusing on variety shows rather than performances onstage since Tiffany has been injured. Apart from member Seohyun's weekly appearance on MBC We Got Married, SNSD appeared on SBS Running Man, Strong Heart, KBS 2TV Happy Together, Night Star, etc.

Recently, they have also filmed a special anniversary episode of MBC Come to Play With Yoo Jaesuk and Kim Wonhee and Sunday Sunday Night- Enjoy Today. They're making it their goal to show a different side that fans haven't seen before through variety shows.

[news] Park Jin Young, How did he apologize?

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 03:01 AM PST

Singer and producer Park Jin Young apoligized.

On the 10th, Park Jin Young posted JYP Entertainment's official home page with the title 'Hello this is Park Jin Young'. Park Jin Young replied to Sidus HQ's iHQ CEO Jung Hoon Tak's tweet early in the morning that had a picture of Park Jin Young an the swear word 'S.O.B'.

Park Jin Young's apology allowed the brooding war between the two best entertainment companies' CEOs to be avoided.

Next is the text that Park Jin Young posted.

Hello. I haven't personally written something in a while.

I'm writing this with an upset and regrettable heart.

On the recording of today's TV Program, there was a question about the incident earlier in the year about a 2PM member and I avoided answering with the absolute truth, but I was able to talk about how I felt during that time.
Before I appeared as a guest on the show, I asked them to avoid talking about this incident so I was relaxed, but because they asked the question so suddenly, I think I was caught by surprise.
After the recording ended, I asked them to take out that topic, but through the people who were at the recording site, a lot of bad stories have spread.

At the end, the people were hurt because of what I said and I apologize that this has again become an issue.

I'm upset that I have to leave a message about something bad that occurred when the end of the year should end in a beautiful way. I will become more careful, and will meet everyone with good stories from now on.

A new book on the 'Hallyu,' or Korean Wave, has been adopted as a textbook for universities abroad.

The English book titled "Korean Masculinities and Transcultural Consumption: Yonsama, Rain, Oldboy, K-Pop Idols" was selected as one of the main textbooks for the media classes at Goldsmiths, University of London in England and the University of Melbourne in Australia.

Written by Sun Jung, a research fellow in the School of Communication and Arts at Victoria University, the book explores into several cultural phenomenons revolving around South Korean stars including the Singaporean fandom of singer and actor Rain, the middle-aged Japanese female fandom of actor Bae Yong-joon, the Western online cult fandom of thriller pic "Oldboy," as well as the emerging versatile masculinity represented by K-pop idol boy bands.

"This is a highly original, clearly written, and well-argued study that examines how Korean masculinity is being reconstructed through its regional and global circulation as part of the Korean Wave, producing new forms that negotiate local Korean creative energies and regional and international consumer forces," Professor Chris Berry of film and television studies at Goldsmiths was quoted as saying in a press release by Hong Kong University (HKU) Press that published the book on December 1.

The book, sporting singer and actor Rain on the front cover, is available at various online bookstores.

Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon, is arguably one of the most successful Korean stars in the Asia region who has achieved a phenomenal level of success in both singing and acting, paving the way for his acting debut in Hollywood with a supporting role in the Wachowski Brothers' pic "Speed Racer," followed by a lead role in martial arts film "Ninja Assassin."

Bae, 37, is one of the first Korean actors to make a major breakthrough into Japan and the Asia region. He shot to stardom after starring in 2002 hit TV series "Winter Sonata" alongside actress Choi Ji-woo and has since been promoting himself and Korean culture in Asia.

"Oldboy," helmed by critically acclaimed director Park Chan-wook, has received high praises from critics since its release in 2003 and won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Starring Korean actor Choi Min-sik, "Oldboy" is about a man who is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing why. He plots revenge upon his release and finds himself trapped in conspiracy, violence and falling in love with an attractive young chef.
