Moon Chae-won interview: Becoming daddy’s girl

Posted: 05 Dec 2010 07:09 AM PST

As I’d mentioned before, I’m finding the new SBS drama It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl watchable and interesting despite a number of flaws that do, admittedly, hold it back from being as good as it could be. But I like the setup and responded strongly to the family relationships — and it doesn’t hurt that the drama’s lead actress, Moon Chae-won, is finally getting a chance to show what she can do.

She hasn’t totally proven herself yet, but she’s off to a decent start, especially in comparison to her previous roles. She’s had some memorable parts in the past but only as side characters, some of whom were relegated to one-dimensional plot movers. But Moon has been steadily accruing more screentime and experience, through dramas like Painter of the Wind (she played a beautiful gisaeng who falls for Moon Geun-young, who passes herself of as a man), Brilliant Legacy (where she was an antagonist to the Cinderella-like lead, Han Hyo-joo), and My Fair Lady (where she was bright and energetic, but wasted in lame plots).

Secret Garden: Episode 7

Posted: 04 Dec 2010 08:55 PM PST

If Episode 6 was a fantastically zany, nonstop hour of insane body-swap antics, then Episode 7 is a dash of that mixed with more of an emotional element. Always welcome, in my book.

Also: If the naming gets confusing, just remember: The name that it sounds like (Ra-Him = Ra-im) is the name of the actual soul/spirit/character. The second part of the name is there to remind us that the soul is in the opposite body.

Chun Jung-myung to take on his first sageuk?

Posted: 04 Dec 2010 12:51 PM PST

Everyone’s favorite baby-faced man-boy Chun Jung-myung (Cinderella’s Sister, What’s Up Fox) is looking at his next project…a sageuk? Historical dramas aren’t his usual fare, but it’d be his first, so I’m all for uncharted waters. Thankfully, it’s a fusion sageuk, so there’s bound to be enough cheekiness to go around.

The drama is MBC’s upcoming [짝패] meaning “pair, duo, companion” a la The Marx Brothers, or Bonnie and Clyde. Until they come up with an official English title, I’m going with The Duo. Hm. Sounds like a Western, huh?

The fusion sageuk is a Joseon-era tale of two men, one born noble and the other born a slave…who get switched at birth and live each other’s lives. Has potential, depending of course on how far off the deep end they go with the melodramatics. I enjoyed this basic setup in East of Eden, for instance. That is…until they beat that dead horse into a pulp, fed it to a NEW horse, then beat THAT one till it died.
