Yoo Ah-in’s photo shoot for Vogue Girl

Posted: 02 Oct 2010 05:38 AM PDT

I know this will make some (most?) of you VERY happy: Yoo Ah-in!

He takes off the Joseon-era robes and dons “chic urban” wear in this new photo shoot for Vogue Girl magazine. Can’t say I love the clothes… or the styling… or the shoot itself… BUT! It’s Yoo Ah-in! He somehow manages to mix adorable with fierce like nobody else.

Before his current drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal, I remember predicting that Yoo would steal the show, and the drama hasn’t failed to live up to my expectations of him. As Jae-shin, aka “Guh-ro,” he plays the hotheaded one of the main quartet, letting his fists fly first and asking questions later. He’s also the deeply loyal one, standing up for his beliefs and friends with a fierceness that’s always simmering under the surface. A far cry from his cute, light roles in The Man Who Can’t Marry and Antique Bakery, but there were flashes of that intensity in Strongest Chil-woo.

Dr. Champ: Episode 1

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 08:34 PM PDT

I’m baaaaaack! And you can either love it or hate it. Javabeans and Girlfriday have been kind enough to let me AND *wait for it* aberdeen_angus recap this series. (Heh – we have unintentionally become the “Kim So Yeon recappers.”) I am going into this series with particularly low expectations because of two things: 1) there was very little hype going into this drama and 2) I am afraid it might have a disappointing run like I Am Legend where it starts off strong and falls kinda flat. BUT – episode 1 has definitely got me on my tiptoes with excitement.

By the way – I’m calling dibs on Uhm Tae Woong, since I’m sharing Park Shi Hoo with aberdeen_angus. I’ve never found him handsome before, but gosh, what a hot cripple…

Moon Jung-hee joins Mary Stayed Out All Night

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 04:35 PM PDT

Buzztastic trendy drama Mary Stayed Out All Night is starting to fill its ranks, as Moon Jung-hee (Oh My Lady, My Sweet Seoul, Air City) joins the cast. She will be playing a femme fatale, upsetting the balance in the Moon Geun-young / Jang Geun-seok couple.

The drama is penned by In Eun-ah, of Goong and Love Marriage, and directed by PD Hong Suk-goo, lauded for his drama specials, Kyung-sook, Kyung-sook’s Father, and Red Candy, starring Park Shi-yeon. So far, so good.

I’m liking the stars, the creative staff, and kind of can’t wait to see Moon Geun-young and Kim Jae-wook in a comedy. We all know Jang Geun-seok is hilarious. But the other two, I’m betting, will be awkward in the best way possible. I know JB hates it when I bring up Cinderella’s Sister, but we saw a few glimpses of Moon’s comedic chops there, albeit in a darkly funny way. (Back when the show had a sense of humor). It’s going to be great to see her play light and breezy.

Besides which, how can one plot have TWO fake contract marriages? It’s almost too good to be true! I can’t wait to find out the writing gymnastics that’ll go on to make that come to fruition. (Since we’re on the subject, Show, I don’t care if it’s farce, but I want it to make sense!)

Moon Jung-hee has an impressive resume full of plays, musicals, dramas, and films, and can be seen most recently in the action film The Fixer.

Mary Stayed Out All Night premiers on KBS on Monday, November 8.

Kim Yoo-jung poised to break the space-time continuum

Posted: 01 Oct 2010 01:10 PM PDT

Child actress Kim Yoo-jung (Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child) has been cast in the MBC weekend drama Flames of Desire, not as one, but TWO characters. Really, Show? Are you that strapped for cash?

Will she be playing a shapeshifter? No. A body snatcher or face-copier? Nope. She’s just going to play the younger versions for both Seo Woo and Shin Eun-kyung‘s characters. Er, what now?

I know, I’m giving the show a hard time. But really…do they think we’re stupid? Because not only do we recognize kids who hop from drama to drama (most recently the kid from Cinderella’s Sister, I Am Legend, and Sungkyunkwan Scandal), but I think we’d KNOW if Kim, who’s very recognizable, appeared in the same drama as TWO different characters.

The only way I see this not jumping the shark is if there’s a story point, involving the characters’ doppelganger-hood. C’mon, Show. There’s a valid reason, right? RIGHT?

Sigh. I don’t know if that’s the case, and I wasn’t really planning on watching this makjang sucker, but I may have to now, just to see what possible reason they’d have, to get one girl to defy all logic of time and space. K-dramaland is truly testing my sanity with this one.

Flames of Desire stars Shin Eun-kyung, Seo Woo, Yoo Seung-ho, Lee Soon-jae, and Jo Min-ki, and premieres on MBC this Saturday.

Yay for forward movement! Our Man-Robot Seung-jo takes some big strides toward becoming a real boy, and this episode is chock-full of sweet moments that warm the cockles of my jaded heart and send Ha-ni to cloud nine. And a happy Ha-ni is a happy Playful Kiss.
